Sunday Dinner- plus my new favorite beverage

Two recipes for y'all today- both delicious, and both of questionable health value. Here at Casa Rodman, we do attempt to be mostly healthy in our eating habits, but we indulge in "bad" stuff quite a bit, too. This first one's straight outta the trailer park, as far as ingredients and execution! It's cheap (Orangette is the Walmart store-brand Orange Crush knockoff, less than $5 for a two-four), dirty (laden with corn syrup and artificial coloring), but tasty as all get-out, and you don't have to worry if your kids steal a sip behind your back. Here it is:

Orangette Cocktail

The Orangette Cocktail (non-alcoholic!)

You will need:
 1/4 lime
1 chilled can Orangette
a couple of ice cubes

Squeeze your lime quarter into a glass, or a pint jar. Drop in your ice cubes, and pour the chilled Orangette over them. Sip and smile. The taste hearkens back to childhood, when the best things in life were heavily sweetened.

And then there's...

Too Much Garlic Butter Garlic Bread

Too Much Garlic Butter Garlic Bread

You'll need:
1 loaf French or Italian bread
1 stick butter, softened
2 t. garlic salt
1 T. garlic powder (NOT granulated garlic)
about 1/4 c. finely chopped Italian parsley

With a fork, thoroughly blend the butter, garlic salt and powder, and the Italian parsley. Slice up the bread, and spread thickly with garlic butter. Wrap in foil and bake at 350F for 20 or more minutes, to desired done-ness. (The Things and I are partial to baking it until it develops a fried-like crust on the bottom of the loaf, almost like croutons but greasier. And garlickier. Dear Lord, that's good.) Serving size: however much of it you can grab before your kids do!

Our menu tonight consists of the above, plus fried chicken (see my recipe here), plus steamed carrots and Klondike Rose spuds. Trying some new tweaks to the chicken recipe (cumin, celery seed, and dried chives ground fine and added to the marinade)- we'll see how that works out. Health food? Probably not. But we'll have happy tummies tonight!

Post-script: We had a crash course in alternative baking of the garlic bread tonight- during the chicken-frying session, I began to smell gas- we had quite the scare tonight. The oven has decided to take a dump on us, unfortunately. Fortunately, the kitchen did NOT blow up, and no one was harmed, but it looks like baking and roasting indoors are out of the question. We did find out, though, that garlic bread can be successfully baked using a gas grill, on the top rack, with the burners at the lowest setting. Just so long as you turn the package over, every few minutes, and shorten the cooking time. I managed this by running outside and flipping it over every time the chicken needed to be turned in the Dutch oven, so this worked out pretty well- only minimal scorch-marks on the bread, and no complaints from the fam. *Sigh* Looks like the crock pot and the new rice cooker are going to be the stars of the dinnertime show this week.

Have a great rest-of-your-weekend, all!

Linking up to Craft-O-Maniac Monday, the best part of Monday morning!
